Is 2 hours enough for tie-dye?

Here's the simple answer. Tie-dye needs to sit for at least 8 hours, but ideally up to 24 hours, before rinsing. Keep the dyed items wet and in a warm place. And if you live in a dry climate, you should keep them wrapped in plastic to prevent them from drying out.

For you desperate "have-it-nows," you can unwrap after 8 hours. But you can also leave the shirt for as long as 36 hours if you are very patient.

The longer the better, I let mine sit overnight and recommend you do the same. By letting it soak, you are giving the dye time to react with and stain the cotton fibers from the inside out.

To help set the dye, we recommend using your microwave. Wrap the dyed fabric in plastic wrap and seal the edges. Place the wrapped fabric on a paper towel in the microwave and heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Plastic will puff up, creating a heat chamber that helps bond the dye with the fabric.

Is it better to tie-dye wet or dry?

Does it matter if my item is wet or dry before I start tie-dyeing? We generally recommend washing your fabric and leaving it damp before tie-dyeing, as the dye has an easier time saturating the fabric when it's wet.

Do you wash tie-dye in hot or cold water? Rinse tie-dye items in cold or cool water until the excess dye has been removed and the water runs clear. Then, wash the tie-dye items in hot water with Synthrapol or another dye-safe laundry detergent.
